Why do cars have a button to push for cruise control?

Posted by admin under Other - Cars & Transportation
Captain Pessimism asked:

What I mean is, if pressing “set” on the cruise control turns it on and pressing the break turns it off, why have a seperate button that activates the cruise control options?

If you didn’t want use it, all you’d have to do is not press “set”…it makes no sense to me that you have to press a button just to have the option whether or not you want to press another button to set the CC. A bit redundant, no?

i drive cross country and cruise control helps a lot especially on the highway. but that is the only time i use it. i do agree with you that there are too many buttons and procedures

I agree and I have always wondered that myself. It’s a pain in the behind to mess with that extra setting while you are driving
It would be so much easier to have a one touch set feature or better yet, voice activated cruise control.

You should only have to have two command settings not three, cruise and resume that’s it.

The cruise on and off buttons are usually on imports. The domestics most often don’t have one. The Japanese thought you could accidentally hit the set button while driving and that is why the on/off button is present on the imports. I used to think it was stupid until I was driving a domestic car and accidently hit the set button. Hope this helps!

its to make sure that you dont accidentally turn on your cruise control. some people engine brake, meaning they leave the car in gear and let the engine rev down and slow hte car instead of using brakes. its easy to accidentally hit the set button, and that wouldnt be too good if you were expecting your car to slow down, but instead you are staying at constant speed. the 2 button system makes it safer.
